Did You Know?

People can have different reactions to the same drug? An individual’s genetic makeup determines how the body "utilizes" or is "sensitive" to the drug. Predicting a response to a drug due to a person’s genes is called pharmacogenomics.

The FDA acknowledges the existence of pharmacogenomics with a common drug, warfarin. After insulin, warfarin is the most common drug that leads to emergency room visits due to adverse drug reactions. As much as 33% of patients on warfarin utilize warfarin unpredictably, due to variations of the genes CYP2C9 and VKORC1.

Studies continue to explore a more accurate starting dose, but ongoing warfarin therapy is still guided by INR results.
